Merwolf Simplifies In-Home Networking We Pups are a helpful bunch. When one of us received the generous gift of a laptop computer she asked if anyone had ideas for an easy way to transfer her files from the desktop to the laptop. One helpful pup [who's name is currently lost, but please step forward for your due credit] suggested setting up a network. Then The Alpha stepped in with her suggestions. To help you decifer we include for you Queen Laur's Techie Talk: A Glossary of Obscure Technical Terms Invoked by the Geekasauri. Suggestion No. 1
Its worth setting up an network. 4 port hub should run you no more than $40 US. For such a small network it may be worth buying premade cable instead of crimping your own, unless you have a long run you have to make. If you are only connecting 2 PCs you dont need a hub, just a cross-over cable between the 2 NICs. "4 port hub" - clearly a typo as this should refer to a *massage* using 4 different types of fortified sweet wines
"premade cable" - this refers to cable stations that are already programmed in your VCR and change automatically when your @#*^$)$ cable company decides to renumber everything. "crimping" - when you have to bite down on your tongue while watching Married with Fishsticks so as not to scream back at the TV. Usual procedure for uncrimping is to watch Season 2 again. "a long run you have to make" - Applies mainly to Dar when she gets too frusterated in board meetings. Sometimes she'll settle for "cat punching" (no they're not real cats--see below) "2 PCs" - A completely uncomical duo that can tell no jokes for fear of the social repercussions "cross-over cable" - These are the mind bending threads that lead to such fan-fiction as the Xena/Battlestar Galactica stories "2 NICs" - Isn't one Nic enough??? Missy has Her Say
Why not just install a cat 5 punch down inthe closet? Seriously - just for transferring files, you could get a Laplink cable and go that way between your two computers - it's much cheaper, and it does the job without using floppies. I have an Ethernet mini hub that I'm in the process of installing for this place here, but to be honest, it's just so I can do storybits on my laptop, and send them to the desktop without having to attach the external floppy drive. (actually.. I have an MSN account set up on the laptop so if I get really lazy, I connect to the internet on my other phone line and send the storybit to myself upstairs)
"cat 5 punch" - Although the terms sounds self-evident, don't be fooled.
This is a Southern recipe for putting up a bowl of punch. It doesn't
really have 5 cats in it. Well, they're mock cats.
"in the closet" - closest I could find is "batting left-handed, but wearing the glove on the other hand" "Laplink cable" - (1) a restraining cable tied across laps, like seatbelts, to link a large number of bus riders together (2) a kind of knit-velvet sweater worn around the lap "go that way between your two computers" - wherein two computers are set up to dial in continuously. One to pick up mail and the other to check for new rumors. "floppies" - an inferior storage device....called floppies because if you tried to put "Dark Comes the Morning" on one of them, it would [flop] "Ethernet" - an intoxicating web also used to power cars "mini hub" - clearly another typo as this should refer to a small pool of hot water "storybits" - similar to manna "external floppy drive" - that which motivates the floppy on the outside "MSN account" - The Multiple Story Nexus is a specialized account to allow users to work on many story projects simultaneously "lazy" - yeah, right..... |
