A message from Missy Good about the Lost Chance episode:

Hey guys -

(laughing ruefully)

We got bad news about V1422. Though the script was submitted, and the staff was working on it - they were unable to obtain all the musical and performance clearances in order to safely produce the script. So - unfortunately, there will be no third ep for me. They've got a backup script they're doing, a comedy that sounds really cute - and I think y'all will end up liking it very much.

I have a bit of mixed feelings about it - of course I wanted to see it performed - but it also was going to push the envelope quite a bit, and it had me chewing my fingernails a little wondering how you all were going to react to it. (g)

Be that as it may - I'm checking to see if I can make the final draft script for this available (that's about as exclusive an exclusive as you're gonna get) for the American Cancer Society raffle for Pasadena.

RUDNICK:

I understand you had some difficulty when you wanted to have Melissa Good write some episodes. Did you have trouble with people convincing them to do that?

TAPERT:

(smiles) Only amongst my writing staff. It's not conventional to go into fandom and pluck out a writer. It invites problems. It's also challenging to the staff. I give R.J. a great deal of credit. Missy did a pretty darn good job on LEGACY (117/605). The whole system worked exactly as it should have. He [R.J.] spent maybe a day or two polishing up some stuff, working out a bit of logic, this and that. All in all, her script was left pretty much intact. COMING HOME (113/601), due to the story we had assigned her, R.J. had more to do in acts three and four, working out a bunch of mechanisms.

On COMING HOME, Missy did as good a job as I would expect any junior or new staff writer to do, but that was a struggle because the first two acts were left intact and the last two acts needed more work. There were some holes in the story. We noticed Xena didn't talk to her daughter after she was "arrested" by the Amazons, things like that. Then we putzed around with it some more down here.

But I'll tell you why I like working with Missy Good: she loves Xena and Gabrielle. That's invaluable to me. If I had my druthers I'd have Missy write two more scripts, but I'll take what I can get and have her write one more.

See, I have a big decision to make. I have this giant Sappho episode that I've wanted to do since the middle of the second season. At that time, R.J. and Liz [Friedman] talked me out of it. R.J. said, "You're only going to get into trouble." Liz thought that I was going to show predatory lesbians and that was unflattering. But I've worked out bits and pieces with Missy and I have a tremendous love of musicals. I wanted to make this into a big, nutty, musical extravaganza. But they're so expensive. They're a half a million dollars over pattern. If I do that, it really hinders me. It's like FALLEN ANGEL (91/501). If I do one like that, I have to do a KINDRED SPIRITS (107/517) and a LIFEBLOOD (106/516). Musicals are time consuming. They require a lot of extra rehearsal. They need rest so Lucy's voice is good and she's not screaming. Now I have to decide if I want to spend the money. But everybody will get what they want.

THE CHANGING OF THE BARD

"According to some juicy gossip just in, there has been some more changes in the writing staff again, even though we are down to the wire in production time. BUT never fear Missy Good fans. Madame Merwolf has been given another script with special instructions. Now Laura Sue has to wonder about some of the instructions that writers recieve from Rob and RJ. Do these instructions, aside from reading lists, also have field trips normally as part of them (as gossip has it for Missy)? Laura Sue has to wonder what the instructions were for MARRIED WITH FISHSTICKS..."drink a quart of grain liquor, chase it with some Ecstacy, watch the cartoon network for one week straight without sleep, and lose all self respect". "And let's not forget the WB's Warrior Princess and her gal pal. In "Xena: Warrior Princess," Xena (Lucy Lawless) and Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) are, well, lost in a mythological morass where they battle brutal warlords and save innocent people. But, fortunately, they still have plenty of time to take nude baths together, frequently declare their undying love, and embrace each other in ways that would have made Ellen and Anne blush. In short, this is the most explicitly romantic show for lesbians on TV, as long as it doesn't bother you that they are never officially girlfriends with a capital G. Just to prove that the Xena execs are consciously walking the line, this season they've hired fan fiction writer Melissa Good, known in the fanzine Web world for her erotic subplots, to write a few of the episodes. The rumor of a defining kiss is in the air. Too bad it's Xena's final season. "

Posted on the Merwolfpack mailing list by pup Judith: This from the Cherry Hill Convention:
"When asked what she thought of the script Coming Home by Missy Good, Adrienne Wilkinson said it was great and that having Missy there for re-writes and stuff was a very *good* thing:}
Then, I casually asked her what she thought of the dialogue:} She immediately said it was the best dialogue she has ever heard in her life. The attending Pups howled and applauded uproariously!!! A memorable moment for the Pups. Quite possibly for AW as well. (g)"
